#1: Thinking you can do it yourself. There are so many problems with this. Of course we all want to save money, but it’s a certainty that you won’t have the proper equipment, and if you did have the equipment, you probably paid retail.

Also, be sure to check your warranty; many carpet manufacturers include a clause that states clearly that if not installed exactly to the manufacturer's specifications, damage will not be covered.
#2: Miscalculating measurements. Rooms are not perfect squares. You have baseboards and closets with which to contend. Plus, you need to calculate things like carpet width. If you have even the slightest doubt, have a pro do it.
#3: Ignoring the overall design of your house. The installation might be in a separate room, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to think about transitions. Even if it’s to be installed in a separate room, you’ll still want some cohesiveness. Think about the overall design; that’s especially important with today’s open floor plans.
How Can You Tell if You Have a Good Carpet Installation?
Is your carpet free of rolls, waves and bumps? Are the edged tucked in? Does it lie flat or “climb up against the wall?” Do the seams line up? Are there snags? Do you see excessive shedding? A little in the beginning is normal, but if it goes on for any length of time, that can indicate a problem.
